RESEARCH
The 3D organization of the genome plays a critical role in cellular processes including gene expression. Unfortunately, the diffraction limit of light has constrained our ability to achieve a complete understanding of fine scale details of organization. A new technology developed by the Wu lab, called OligoSTORM, circumvents this limitation and enables visualization of chromatin at unprecedented levels, at the nanoscale (<20nm resolution). My research uses OligoSTORM to uncover chromatin nanostructure in human cells. Furthermore, I study the effects of extreme stress, including zero-gravity and desiccation, on chromatin nanostructure. My interests stem from improving human health, both on Earth and in Space. An understanding of chromatin nanostructure and the impact that extreme stresses may have on it is critical, given the role that organization plays on transcription. Furthermore, my research aims to develop ways in which we can better protect our genomes.
